SEO for Images & Alt Text

Hello Chasers,

When you’re optimising your website for search engines (SEO), it’s important to consider all aspects of your content, including your images. Image SEO can help your site rank higher in search results, including Google Images.

What is image SEO?

Image SEO is the process of optimizing your images so that they are more likely to be found and ranked by search engines. This includes using relevant keywords in your image file names, alt text, and surrounding content.

Why is image SEO important?

Image SEO is important because it can help you reach a wider audience and drive more traffic to your website. When your images rank high in Google Images, they are more likely to be seen by people who are searching for the topics related to your website.

How to optimise your images for SEO

Here are some tips for optimising your images for SEO:

Use descriptive file names. Rename your image files so that they include relevant keywords. For example, instead of naming an image file “IMG001.jpg,” name it “red-running-shoes.jpg.”

Add alt text to your images. Alt text is a brief description of an image that is displayed if the image cannot be loaded. Alt text is also important for accessibility, as it allows screen readers to describe images to visually impaired users. When writing alt text, be descriptive and include relevant keywords. For example, instead of writing “This is a picture of a shoe,” write “Red running shoe with white laces.”

Use relevant keywords in the surrounding content. The text that surrounds your images can also help search engines understand what your images are about. Be sure to use relevant keywords in your image captions, headings, and body text.

Tips for optimising alt text

Here are some tips for writing effective alt text:

  • Be descriptive and accurate. Alt text should describe what is happening in the image, including any important details. For example, if the image is a picture of a group of people, describe who the people are and what they are doing.
  • Be concise. Alt text should be no longer than 125 characters. This is because screen readers often stop reading alt text after 125 characters.
  • Use relevant keywords. You can include relevant keywords in your alt text but avoid keyword stuffing. Keyword stuffing is the practice of overusing keywords to manipulate search engine rankings.

Image SEO is an important part of any comprehensive SEO strategy. By optimising your images for SEO, you can reach a wider audience and drive more traffic to your website.

If used correctly, you will have an optimised image that will provide a better chance of your ideal customer finding you.

Have a great day!
